About Morocco
Situated on the north-west corner of Africa, Morocco is
bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to its west, the Mediterranean
Sea to its north, Algeria to its east and the Western Sahara
to its south. It has a land area of 446,550 sq kms. The
Atlas Mountains divide the country running northeastward
from the south. They have an elevation of 3,353m (11,000
ft) above sea level.
Politically,
Morocco is a Constitutional Monarchy. The King is Muhammed
VI. He came to power in 1999 following the death of his
father, Hassan II. Driss Jettou has been the Prime Minister
since 2002. The Capital is Rabat and the largest cities
in order from the largest are Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech.
The population
of Morocco is 33,241,259 (2006 est.).
The official language is Arabic together with several Berber
dialects, and French is often used in business, government
and diplomacy. The currency is the Dirham.
From a travel point of view, Morocco is a beautiful country
not unlike Australia, with many Eucalyptus trees surrounding
the countryside. The cities are exotic; burgeoning with
chaos, between old and new forms of transport and a mix
of locals and tourists. As an Islamic country, the locals
have a slow, easy attitude to their lifestyle, believing
everything will come to its logical conclusion, "Inchalah!"
Morocco should
definitely be on your "Must Visit List".
